You can play anywhere! Below are ideas to play at home, in nature, and anywhere else outside the walls of The Iowa Children’s Museum. Check back often for new ways to play and be sure to follow us on Facebook and Instagram for even more ideas!

Online FunLAB

Join us for virtual adventures, activities, and play in the FunLAB! During Spring Break, we are offering free FunLAB activities with the purchase of a Play Pack. Sign up or purchase your Play Pack below!

March 7, 2pm

Winter FunLAB Series: Take Flight!

In this virtual workshop we will take to the skies! ICM educators will teach you about the forces of flight and lead you in different flying experiments with paper airplanes. No pilot’s license is required to join this workshop!

Materials needed: paper, paper airplane folding templates (found here), timer, measuring tape, paper clips, tape, a coin

Our winter workshops follow a Pay-As-You-Can model so everyone has the opportunity to play.

Play Pack Series: Out of this World

Join ICM educators as we walk you through our “Out of this World” Play Pack and dive into what a flight deck is and how you can personalize yours!

Play Pack Series: Crash Course in Engineering

In this virtual workshop, ICM educators will take you on a crash course of our Engineering Play Pack! We will give you tips on how to make your maze even trickier and the science behind the roller coaster.

Play Pack Series: Magical Mysteries

The Headmistress of The ICM Academy of Magical Mysteries will guide students through creating their Book of Lore and Magic Wand, the most important tools to have on a magical adventure!

Eye See ‘Ems

Check out our new Eye See ‘Em displays around town! Eye See ‘Em is an area-wide, public art and eye spy experience from The Iowa Children’s Museum! Constructed from reused materials and found objects (toys, tools, trinkets), each Eye See ‘Em Monster is a free-standing installment in the color coded series scattered throughout the area. Families can walk to the nearest monster or complete a driving tour of the entire collection.

Nature Play

Explore your world with this free outdoor program! We’re providing themed activities throughout the summer that get the whole family involved in scientific exploration and observation.

Virtual STEM Family Free Night

STEM Family Free Night is going virtual! We’ll post new videos on the last Wednesday of the month to explain the STEM challenge. Join us on Facebook and Instagram the last Friday of the month at 6pm for a LIVE demonstration.
