Sensory Inclusive™

Sensory Inclusive Initiative

The Iowa Children’s Museum is Sensory Inclusive™ certified. By partnering with KultureCity, we ensure our exhibits, programs, and events foster a more accommodating and positive experience for guests with sensory needs.
KultureCity is the nation’s leading nonprofit on sensory accessibility and acceptance for those with invisible disabilities. KultureCity resources have been used in over 900 venues across the United States to effect change for those with sensory needs.

Sensory Resources

All PLAYologists at The Iowa Children’s Museum are trained to recognize guests with sensory needs, how to identify sensory overload, and how to support and communicate with caregivers or those individuals when needed.

Sensory bags are equipped with items that can help lessen sensory overload, including noise-reducing headphones and fidget toys. Sensory bags are available for checkout at the front desk.

Posted KultureCity Sensory Inclusive™ signage indicates louder areas of the museum where headphones may be helpful, as well as Quiet Zones to help you navigate exhibits. Headphones are most useful in Take Flight, Notion of Motion, and the Lights Out! exhibits.

Families can access a dedicated sensory room for those who may need a quieter and more secure environment. The Family Sanctuary is located within the ImaginAcres exhibit and provides a private, quiet area away from the exhibits. Cozy seating, reading nook, a sensory light tube, and a peaceful playhouse offer a welcoming and inclusive space for all guests during their visit. Our Family Sanctuary is available for guest use at any time.

Social Story

Sensory Friendly Events

Join us on the last Sunday of each month for Sensory Friendly Night. During Sensory Friendly Night, we provide adjusted sound levels and limit attendance to create a calmer environment to let your child explore and learn in a comfortable, supportive environment.
