SUMMARY:Tech Trek: Fall 2024 Session Begins
DESCRIPTION:Tech Trek introduces children (grades 1-5) to the world of technology through interactive projects and imaginative play. Our program is specifically designed for elementary-aged learners to build 21st Century skills like collaboration\, communication\, and creativity. We combine hands-on technologies and unplugged activities for a fun introduction to tech concepts. \nDuring Tech Trek\, your child will have the opportunity to tinker\, create\, and problem-solve. We use programmable robots\, 3D printers\, coding games\, and more to give kids a glimpse into the exciting careers that are possible in the tech industry. With Tech Trek\, kids learn through play as they tackle educational and engaging projects. \nOne of the things that makes Tech Trek so special is that it’s completely hands-on. Kids explore the inner workings of technology and use their creativity and curiosity to come up with their own solutions to challenges. Tech Trek is also unique in that it includes time for kids to explore museum exhibits. \nSkills we explore: basic coding concepts\, program development\, circuitry\, internet safety \nTools we use and love: BeeBot programmable robots\, Lego WeDo\, Makey Makey invention kits\, Snap Circuits\, Finch Robot 2.0\, Cubelets robot blocks\, 3D printer \n\nSchedule: This session is 6 weeks long and meets on Wednesday afternoons from 3:15 to 5:30 pm. To accommodate school release and travel time\, we offer a flexible drop-off period and free play in the museum between 3:15 and 4:00 before moving into project-based learning time. \nCost: $180 per session (sessions meet weekly for six weeks) \nWho This Program is For: Children in Grades 1-5 \nOther Program Details \n\nClass size is a maximum of 12 students.\nOur learning environment will include exhibits at The Iowa Children’s Museum as well as our classroom space.\nCaregivers are asked to bring a reusable water bottle for their child each day. Snacks will not be provided.\nExtended care (before 3:15 or after 5:30 PM) is not available at this time

This event is designed for families with members who experience sensory sensitivities\, are on the autism spectrum\, or who have any health needs that would make a quieter visit more enjoyable. Admission is free during Sensory Friendly Night\, thanks to our friends at GreenState Credit Union. \nWe understand that the museum can be a bustling place. During Sensory Friendly Night\, we provide adjusted sound levels and limit attendance to create a calmer environment. Families can explore the museum at their own pace. As always\, we have KultureCity Sensory Inclusive™ signage to help you navigate exhibits and sensory bags available for checkout at the front desk. Our Family Sanctuary is also available for guest use at any time. \nJoin us for a fun evening and let your child explore and learn in a comfortable and supportive environment!

SUMMARY:Gallery Hours for Potential Space: A Serious Look at Child’s Play
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Tuesday\, September 24th\, from 8:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. and Thursday\, September 26th\, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. for our open gallery hours for our new temporary exhibit\, “Potential Space: A Serious Look at Child’s Play” by acclaimed photographer\,  Nancy Richards Farese. \nThese special museum hours are free and open to everyone\, including those without children. To take a tour\, visit the museum’s front desk during these times. \n“Potential Space: A Serious Look at Child’s Play” challenges the misconception that play is unimportant. This exhibit promotes play as a public value and encourages visitors to take play seriously\, highlighting its significant benefits for health and well-being. The exhibition features photographs taken in fourteen countries over sixteen years\, exploring the culture\, traditions\, and universality of play. Nothing lights up the brain like play\, and this installation highlights how children use play to reduce stress\, adapt to change\, and have fun.  \nThis exhibit will run from August 31st to November 17th\, 2024; guided walkthroughs can be booked during this timetable by appointment. Email our Executive Director\, Jeff Capps\, to set up a tour time: jcapps@theicm.org. \nAbout Nancy Richards Farese\nNancy Richards Farese is a photographer\, artist\, writer\, and social entrepreneur. Founder of PhotoPhilanthropy (2009)\, and CatchLight (2015)\, her work explores the role of the arts and media in civil society and leveraging the power of visual storytelling for the social good. Nancy is an award-winning social documentary photographer\, working with social development agencies to address social and political conditions globally. She has photographed with CARE International as a Photo Ambassador\, with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees\, RefugePoint\, and The Carter Center\, among others. She is the author of Potential Space: A Serious Look at Child’s Play\, published by MW Editions 2021. Her photography and writing have been widely published. \nNancy is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and The Harvard Kennedy  School. She was a fellow at the Shorenstein Center on Media\, Politics and  Public Policy at The Harvard Kennedy School where she was teaching\,  writing\, and researching the evolution of visual journalism and its impact  on policy and academic discourse. Nancy is a 2023 MFA graduate of  Maine Media Collage where she completed Add|Mix|Fold as her thesis work. Throughout the event\, caregivers can also discover how young children learn through different styles of play from our museum educators and get helpful tips to make playtime even more meaningful at home! \nPlease note: Activities from 9-10 a.m. take place during our Member-Only Hours.
