This special event will introduce children to the many ways they can engage in their community and make their voices heard. From voting in a mock election to hands-on activities in our Art Studio\, kids will be introduced to important civic values related to Voting\, Opportunity\, Involvement\, Community\, and Engagement. \nThroughout the day\, children can cast their votes for our playful puppet candidates—Pete and George—or write in their own choice\, all while learning about the democratic process in a fun\, interactive way. Be sure to grab your voter button after casting your ballot and keep an eye out for our candidates as they campaign for votes! \nThe results of this year’s election will determine what dress-up day we will hold during winter break! Help your child discover the many ways they can use their VOICE to shape their world! \nPlease note that this is a mock election for educational purposes\, and The Iowa Children’s Museum is not a registered polling place. DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special Halloween-themed Sensory Friendly Night! This free event offers sensory-friendly activities in a calmer environment and opportunities to collect treats in our museum exhibits. \nCostumes are encouraged (but not required!) as you look for our “treat stations” throughout the museum. Characters from A Moment of Magic will also join us this year from 6-7:00 p.m! \nIn line with the Teal Pumpkin Project\, all treats will be small non-food items to avoid allergy concerns. Drawing on her travels to fourteen countries\, Farese challenges us to reconsider the essential role of play. Humans need play\, and lots of it\, to wire up our brains for a lifetime of development and flourishing. And yet\, a common misconception about play is that it is unimportant. Join award-winning photographer Nancy Farese to explore what happens when we invert the notion of adults teaching children and instead see what children can teach adults about the power of play to build resilience\, collaboration\, and just so much fun. \nMore About Potential Space\nFarese’s book Potential Space: A Serious Look at Child’s Play offers a visual survey of children’s play across 14 countries on behalf of CARE International and the United Nations Commission on Refugees\, reflecting on humanity’s relationship to this essential activity through the lens of diverse cultures\, traditions\, and economics. Check out games from around the world\, sing along with us\, and interact with acclaimed photographer Nancy Richards Farese as she shares stories behind her photos\, provides special activities\, and explores the museum with visitors. \n\n\n\nActivities: \n\nWork on art projects\, explore exhibit photos\, and hear world travel stories\, all with Nancy Richards Farese! \nAdd your favorite memories of playing to our “Together Tree.”\nPlay international games inspired by the exhibit’s photos of play around the world. \nSee where the exhibit photos are taken on our World Money Map!\nSing-along with Jeff and friends at 10:30 a.m.\nEnter to win a copy of ‘Potential Space: A Serious Look at Child’s Play‘ \n\n\nAbout Nancy Richards Farese\nNancy Richards Farese is a photographer\, artist\, writer\, and social entrepreneur. Founder of PhotoPhilanthropy (2009) and CatchLight (2015)\, her work explores the role of the arts and media in civil society and leveraging the power of visual storytelling for the social good. Nancy is an award-winning social documentary photographer\, working with social development agencies to address social and political conditions globally. She has photographed with CARE International as a Photo Ambassador\, with the United Nations High Commission on Refugees\, RefugePoint\, and The Carter Center\, among others. She is the author of Potential Space: A Serious Look at Child’s Play\, published by MW Editions 2021. Her photography and writing have been widely published. \nNancy is a graduate of Vanderbilt University and The Harvard Kennedy  School. She was a fellow at the Shorenstein Center on Media\, Politics\, and Public Policy at The Harvard Kennedy School\, where she was teaching\,  writing\, and researching the evolution of visual journalism and its impact on policy and academic discourse. Nancy is a 2023 MFA graduate of  Maine Media Collage\, where she completed Add|Mix|Fold as her thesis work. She serves on the board of Southwire Company\, the NPR  Foundation\, F3 Charitable Foundation and as Board Chair for CatchLight. She is originally from Carrollton\, GA\, and currently lives in Marin County\,  CA. \nExhibit Support: This installation is made possible by the generous support of New Leader Manufacturing. We also extend our gratitude to Shuttleworth & Ingersoll for sponsoring our gallery hours and special events\, ensuring that this exhibit is accessible to all.

DESCRIPTION:With school back in session\, it’s time to celebrate our littlest learners! Due to the overwhelming success of our first Toddler Takeover\, we’re excited to offer special activities just for kids five and younger each month! \nStop by our party room (located across the hall from our ImagineAcres exhibit designed specifically for children five and younger) for hands-on sensory play and guided activities that spark creativity and movement. Toddler Takeover offers new ways for little ones to learn and play! Throughout the event\, caregivers can also discover how young children learn through different styles of play from our museum educators and get helpful tips to make playtime even more meaningful at home. \nPlease note: Activities from 9-10 a.m. are available during our Member-Only Hours. We open to the public at 10:00 a.m. and invite ALL little learners to join in the fun from 10-11 a.m.
